    The look of the sea...

The Raft elves are pureblooded elves, well-adjusted to the climate and territory in which they reside. They average between 4 and 5 feet tall and have tanned skin. Active elves, and on a diet which is not fattening, most of these elves are very lean. Their most identifying trait is the light webbing between thier fingers and toes. Some have scalloped ears, a genetic heritage way back, but not all have them. They can easily be shaped, however, by the tribal flesh-shaper. (Currently, this is the finshaper Splash.) Some of the Rafters have fins on their lower arms and side/back of their calves, magically shaped for them when the elf is around 25-30 turns old. Others even have the healer of the tribe stop growth of hair at the sides of ones head, giving an aerodynamic appearance. (Mohawk hair-do if you will.)

Hair colors range through nearly any color you might imagine, for these elves. Red hair, however, is not too common and Chiefs will be strict on it. The sun bleaches much of the light colored hair; dark hair attracts the heat and is usually kept short. The Rafters, on the whole, however, tend to let their hair grow out long.

The seaelves have developed a way of spinning and weaving seaweed into fabric for clothing and other needs. They don't use the hides of land animals like bears, ravvits or deer very much at all, but rather the skins of their aquatic kills -- whales, seals, sharks and other large fish. They also will frequently use large shells as part of their clothing. Often, they won't wear anything on their feet, only occassionally donning light sandals or hide 'foot wraps'. (*Note: these 'wraps' tend to leave toes and heels bare, encasing only the arch of the foot and the ankle at most.)

Bright colored dyes are popular and many Rafters have been known even to paint the shells they use when they find something to their liking. There are many colors under the daystar and under the waves, so the Rafters adopt a very colorful attitude in their decoration and will sport any colors ranging from deep blues and greens to vibrant reds and purples through bright pinks, oranges and yellows. (Think Carribean, people!) Stark colors such as black, white, gray or plain browns are uncommon.

It's rare to see a Rafter with no form of adornment on them. Armbands, necklaces and bracelets are made of fish-hide string decorated with shells, coral, carved bone and rock. You are quite likely to find rings and earings made of the same. Although they do not use metals in their decorations, the VastDeep holds a few treasured gems and semi-precious stones in all colors.

Weapons in the Raft tribe, like everything else, are made primarily of rock, bone and coral that has been meticulously shaped into daggers, knives and spear blades. Tridents, spears and javelins are the main chosen hunting weapons; the wood used is close-grained and draws little water into it. Many will soak the spears in heated whale fat and carve rings into the wood for non-slipping grip. Hide strips wrapped around hilts and shafts are not uncommon, either. Metal is never used with weapons, as it weighs them down too much in the water. Other forms of hunting tools are nets and baskets, knitted cages to catch and keep fish and shells.
